Products / Renewable Energy Combustor (REC)

A cleaner furnace for your roaster or dryer.

The Renewable Energy Combustor (REC) is a complete biomass unit for poha, murmura, channa and dal roasters and dryers. It replaces a furnace’s uncontrolled, hand-set fuel and air with automatic feeding and air control, cutting fuel use and ending the black smoke.

Same roaster. New heat source.

A roaster heated by a traditional furnace, and by the REC A horizontal roaster drum sits above its heat source. With a traditional furnace, a hopper, pipe and blower already feed fuel in, but by hand, with a manual dial and no automatic control; heat also leaks through uninsulated brick, and black smoke rises from the stack. With the REC, the same kind of hopper and pipe feed fuel automatically into a closed combustor, fans control the air, ash collects in a settling chamber, a panel keeps it steady, and the stack runs clear. Illustration. The layout varies with each roaster.

Today

  1. 1A hopper, pipe and blower already feed fuel in, but by hand, with no automation or control.
  2. 2Plain, uninsulated brick lets heat escape.
  3. 3Because feed and air are never matched, combustion is incomplete and black smoke goes up the stack.

With the REC

  1. 1The same kind of hopper and pipe now feed fuel automatically, at a controlled rate.
  2. 2A multifuel combustor burns it completely, behind closed fire and ash doors.
  3. 3Air control fans supply the right air to match, for clean burning.
  4. 4An ash settling chamber makes ash easy to remove.
  5. 5An electric panel and sensors keep it steady.

Traditional roaster furnaces waste fuel and smoke

Continuous roasters heat sand to 170 to 220°C, using gas or biomass such as sawdust, rice husk and wood. A traditional furnace already has a hopper, a pipe and a blower to move fuel in, but it is set and run by hand, not automated or controlled. Much of the fuel never becomes useful heat.

Feed and air are never matched

The blower runs at whatever rate the operator sets, with no automatic control and no sensors to adjust it. Too much or too little air at any moment means incomplete combustion.

Heat escapes through the walls

Most poha mill furnaces are built from ordinary bricks with no insulation, so heat leaks out instead of going into the roaster.

The result is smoke and higher cost

Incomplete combustion means black smoke, more fuel burned for the same heat, and pollution the neighbourhood can see.

How the REC works

The REC keeps the same idea as your existing furnace, a hopper and blower feeding fuel in, and automates and controls every part of it. Your roaster stays as it is, and only the way you make heat changes.

1

Fuel feeds automatically

The hopper and blower now run on automatic control, at a steady rate, instead of by hand.

2

Air is matched to it

An air control system gives the fuel the right air at every moment, for complete combustion.

3

The combustor burns it

A true multifuel combustor burns local biomass, pellets or Astillas efficiently.

4

Ash settles and comes out easily

An ash settling chamber collects it, and closed fire and ash doors stop heat leaking.

5

A panel keeps watch

An electric panel with sensors holds conditions steady, hour after hour.

What automation and control change

Matching fuel feed to air, all the time, is what a hand-run furnace can't do. That difference shows up in your fuel bill and in your product.

10 to 20% more efficient

Automatic control raises overall combustion efficiency by 10 to 20%, so less fuel is burned for the same heat.

20 to 30% assured saving

Steamax assures a 20 to 30% saving on your current fuel cost, on top of the efficiency gain.

A genuine multifuel system

Pellet burners and similar systems can't burn sawdust, rice husk, paddy husk, wood chips, briquettes or cashew shell. The REC does, often with no or minimal adjustment.

Better, more consistent product

Uniform heat and no pollution reaching the product improve roasting quality. Some customers fetch a higher price for the improved result.

Made in India

Motors, panels, blowers and wiring are all sourced in India, not imported low-cost parts.

Lifetime service support

Steamax stands behind every REC for its whole life, so your plant is never shut for want of support.

Roasters already running on the REC

Results reported by plants that installed it, running successfully at multiple locations across India.

20 to 30%

lower fuel cost

Mahadev Foods, Bhatapara

The plant eliminated black smoke after installing the REC and cut its fuel cost by 20 to 30%. It also reports being satisfied with Steamax's after-sales service.

25%

lower fuel cost

Tirupati Poha Industries, Bhatapara

The old furnace burned only kauda for roaster heating. With the REC, fuel feeding is now automatic, fuel cost is down 25%, and the black smoke has stopped completely.

Results are as reported by the plants. Your saving depends on your furnace, fuel and roaster.

It burns what is available near you

The REC is a true multifuel combustor, unlike pellet burners and similar systems that can only take one kind of fuel. Most fuel changes need no or minimal adjustment.

Local biomass

Wood logs, wood chips, sawdust, rice husk, paddy husk, groundnut shells and other biomass from around your plant.

Pellets and briquettes

Feed smoothly through the automatic feeder.

Astillas

The Steamax biomass fuel with a high calorific value, ash below 3% and steady supply all year. See Astillas.

Two ways to fit the REC

Both include the automatic feeder, air control, multifuel combustor, ash settling chamber, and fire and ash doors. Which one you need depends on your roaster.

REC Combustor (ST-REC01)

For roaster units that already have proper insulation on the sides and top, so the heat the REC makes has somewhere to stay.

REC Complete Set (ST-REC02)

Everything in ST-REC01, plus an insulated oven system to house the roaster, a top hood with doors and insulation, and additional inspection doors. Built for plants moving off a traditional, uninsulated furnace.

Made for poha, murmura, channa and dal roasters and namkeen fryers. If your furnace or process is different, tell us and we will customise a set.

Questions about the REC

The Renewable Energy Combustor is a complete biomass combustion unit for roasters and dryers. It has a multifuel combustor, automatic fuel feeding, air control, an ash settling chamber, fire and ash doors, and an electric panel with sensors.

Poha, murmura, channa, flaked rice, dal and pulse drying, and namkeen makers, mainly small and medium-scale food processing units. It is running at multiple locations across India.

Most traditional furnaces already have a hopper, a pipe and a blower to move fuel in, but it is set and run by hand, with no automation and no way to match it to the air supply. The REC automates and controls both the feed rate and the air, which is what stops the smoke and cuts the fuel use.

If your roaster already has proper insulation on the sides and top, the REC Combustor (ST-REC01) is enough. If you are moving off a traditional, uninsulated furnace, the REC Complete Set (ST-REC02) adds an insulated oven housing, a top hood and extra inspection doors. Send us your roaster details and we will confirm.

Local biomass such as wood logs, wood chips, sawdust, rice husk and paddy husk, plus pellets, briquettes, cashew shell and Astillas, often with no or minimal adjustment. Pellet burners and similar systems can't burn most of these. If you would rather not source fuel yourself, Steamax can supply Astillas.

Automatic feeding matched to controlled air burns the fuel completely, and plants report that the black smoke has stopped entirely. To hold particulate matter below 50 mg/Nm³ on biomass, add air pollution control such as a bag filter.

Steamax assures a 20 to 30% saving on your current fuel cost, on top of a 10 to 20% gain in combustion efficiency. Your own saving depends on your old furnace, your fuel and your roaster, so treat the estimate above as a guide.

Uniform heat and no pollution reaching the product improve the roast. Some Steamax customers have been able to fetch a higher price for the improved quality.

Every part is sourced in India, including motors, panels, blowers and wiring. Steamax also provides lifetime service support on every REC.
