India’s energy sector is undergoing a significant transformation, strongly emphasizing renewable energy sources. Uttar Pradesh, under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has emerged as a frontrunner in promoting biofuel production. The state government is actively working on a bioenergy policy that will support the growth of bioenergy projects like Compressed Biogas, Bio Coal, Ethanol, and Biodiesel. This initiative strengthens India’s renewable energy base and promises to integrate green energy into everyday life, reducing the country’s dependence on fossil fuels.

A Biofuel Plant in Every District of UP
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has set an inspiring goal of establishing at least one biofuel unit in all 75 districts of Uttar Pradesh. The plan includes utilizing vacant land in villages, revenue lands, and sugar mill premises for setting up biofuel plants and storing biomass. The goal is ambitious but achievable, aiming to produce 500 tonnes of Compressed Bio Gas per day within the next five years, which translates to 1.5 lakh tonnes annually. Similarly, the state targets producing 2000 tonnes per day of bio coal, biodiesel, and bioethanol.
Benefits of Promoting Biofuel Production
The push towards biofuel production in Uttar Pradesh is expected to bring a multitude of benefits:
- Meeting Energy Needs and Creating Jobs: The biofuel industry will help meet local energy demands while generating additional income and employment opportunities.
- Reducing Dependence on Imported Fossil Fuels: The state can significantly reduce its reliance on imported fossil fuels by promoting domestic biofuel production.
- Environmental Benefits: Biofuels contribute to lower carbon emissions, leading to a cleaner environment.
The 2022 Biofuel Policy
The newly introduced biofuel policy is set to remain in effect for five years, with an expected investment influx of Rs 5,500 crore. This policy encourages converting municipal waste, agricultural and mandi waste, and sugar mill by-products into biofuel. This initiative will help reduce pollution by preventing the open burning of waste. The policy offers various subsidies to encourage biofuel production:
- Compressed Biogas: A subsidy of Rs 75 lakh per tonne, up to a maximum of Rs 20 crore.
- Bio Coal: A subsidy of Rs 75,000 per tonne, up to a maximum of Rs 20 crore.
- Infrastructure Support: The government will finance the construction of a five-kilometre approach road for plants with an investment of Rs 50 crore or more.
