The Goa Energy Development Agency (GEDA) and Steamax Envirocare Pvt Ltd (SEPL) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish fuel processing units for Astillas (Steamax Biomass Fuel).

This partnership reflects Goa’s commitment to sustainability by leveraging innovation in the field of high-calorific-value biomass “Astillas.” By addressing the dual challenges of energy efficiency and waste management, this collaboration is set to redefine Goa’s renewable energy landscape.

MoU between GEDA and Steamax

Objective of MoU

The MoU between GEDA and SEPL pertains to:

1. Setting up Advanced Fuel Processing Units: As per the demand, establish a fuel processing unit with a production capacity of 5000 to 15000 tonnes per month.

2. Production of Astillas: SEPL’s signature biomass blend, Astillas, will be produced using advanced, high-efficiency machinery designed to maximize the conversion of bio-waste into a high-performance fuel, ensuring optimal resource utilization and minimal energy loss during processing.

3. Biomass Utilization: The partnership focuses on maximizing biomass potential by leveraging local agricultural residues and diverse feedstocks with advanced technologies within Goa.

Astillas

Key Technical Details of Astillas

Astillas, a premium biomass fuel developed by Steamax, is primarily derived from cashew nut shells. It is complemented by other high-calorific biomass materials to enhance its energy efficiency and performance. Astillas stands out as a clean and energy-efficient alternative to conventional fossil fuels.

1. High Energy Efficiency:

  • Gross Calorific Value (GCV): 4829 Kcal/Kg
  • Net Calorific Value (NCV): 4529 Kcal/Kg. This ensures strong energy output, making Astillas an ideal choice for industries requiring sustainable power generation.

2. Low Ash Content:

  • Ash Percentage: Only 2.16% Minimal ash generation reduces waste handling and contributes to cleaner operations.

3. Environmentally Friendly Composition:

  • Sulphur Content: 0.07% (extremely low)
  • Nitrogen Content: 0.35%
  •  Volatile Matter:72.75%.

4. Physical Characteristics:

  • Moisture Content: 8.49% (ensures efficient combustion)
  • Density: 0.5263 gm/cc. Lightweight and easy to handle, Astillas guarantees smooth processing and transportation.

5. Sustainability and Carbon Neutrality:

  • Astillas are considered carbon-neutral as the carbon released during combustion is offset by the carbon absorbed by cashew plants during growth.

    Looking Ahead: Future Prospects

The GEDA-SEPL partnership opens doors to exciting opportunities for Goa and beyond.

1. Expansion Across Goa: Plans are already in place to set up more biomass processing units across the state. Goa’s agricultural and forestry activities alone contribute an estimated 0.6–0.8 million tonnes annually, presenting untapped potential for energy production. Establishing localized processing units could generate 5–6 MW of power per unit and reduce carbon emissions by 15,000–20,000 tonnes annually per unit.

2. Scaling the Model: The success of this initiative in Goa could inspire similar projects in other states, setting a benchmark for biomass energy utilization. Research highlights that integrating biomass energy into India’s energy mix could reduce dependency on fossil fuels by 10–15%, while supporting rural economies by providing sustainable markets for agricultural waste.

3. Strengthening Public-Private Collaboration: This MoU sets a precedent for future partnerships to advance renewable energy initiatives. The GEDA-SEPL model, focusing on community engagement and technical innovation, could serve as a case study for future policies in India, especially for states aiming to balance industrial growth with environmental sustainability.

A Greener, More Energy-Efficient Future

The MoU between GEDA and Steamax Envirocare is a significant step toward sustainable energy. This collaboration addresses energy challenges and contributes to waste management and environmental preservation.
